Forgotten Castle was inspired by a visit to Astúlez Castle, a medieval fortress standing on a rocky spire in the Valdegovía valley, in northern Spain. Rising from a nearly inaccessible promontory and once reinforced by a high surrounding wall, the castle dominated the region for centuries.
Despite its strategic importance and its glorious past, the structure now lies abandoned, far from the nearest road, gradually reclaimed by vegetation and silence. Its ruined state, entwined with nature, suggests fragments of a forgotten history — traces of lives, conflicts and moments long erased by time.
Rather than depicting historical events, Forgotten Castle imagines the complete life of an anonymous medieval fortress. Each composition represents a different chapter: an abandoned landscape, the search for a suitable place, the construction of the castle, its spiritual and social life, its years of prosperity, the gradual return of nature, and finally the acceptance that while buildings disappear, life continues.
This album is composed of ten instrumental pieces written for string quartet and conceived as a continuous narrative. Each piece represents an imagined scene from the castle’s existence, forming a musical journey through memory, decay and the quiet persistence of place. Written for string quartet, the music combines lyrical melodies, rich contemporary harmonies and chamber textures to evoke places, emotions and imagined memories rather than historical reconstruction.
The final composition, Life Goes On, does not end with tragedy. Instead, it reflects the idea that although human constructions eventually disappear, nature and time continue their course.
